This session explores findings from a published study on paramedic professional identity, with direct implications for EMS administrators. It examines what draws individuals to paramedic practice and how they begin to envision leaving the profession. Attendees will gain insight into how paramedics view themselves as insiders within the first responder community while navigating ongoing challenges for recognition as a member of the healthcare team. The session highlights key workplace stressors and their impact on retention.
Those who attend the session will have the opportunity to 1) learn empirical data specifically based upon the experiences paramedics as they describe their dynamic role in patient care from the prehospital environment to the hospital. In addition, they will 2) learn about the relationship of this transitional role to workplace stressors and 3) its impact as paramedics adapt their practice to prioritize patient advocacy.
